The Game of “Life” through Differentiation
Life Board
Spinner
Career Cards- Instead of drawing you get to choose the career you would enjoy and be the most comfortable with (These are just because, they don’t have anything to do with the game).
Cards in Draw Piles
Life Skills Cards
Show Your Knowledge Cards
Life Skills Cards- You can answer however you are comfortable with… Written, talking, acting out, constructing, discussion, using a video, etc.
Show Your Knowledge Cards-
A variety of questions in all subject areas that you can answer through whatever means you are comfortable with… Written, talking, acting out, constructing, discussion, etc.
You take turns spinning the spinner and going around the board. Whenever you land on a show your knowledge or life skills space you have to draw a card. The card will have what you are trying to teach your group and you can teach them through written expression, talking, acting, constructing, group discussion, or whatever other means you feel comfortable with doing. You could also add a more fun element where the group has to figure out what you are trying to teach them, kind of like charades (for Life Skills) or the question you are answering (for Show Your Knowledge).
What’s the Point?
This game would introduce parents to what differentiation is and how we all are comfortable learning and showing our knowledge in different ways. All parents will probably not show how to do all the life skills and show your knowledge cards in the same way. Some may choose the same, but there will be a lot of differences. This can show parents that as teachers, we need to be willing to teach our students in different ways and let them express themselves in different ways because we all have different comfort zones. Also, it will probably show them that while some people understood a lecture on how to do something like change the oil in a car, others needed to be shown by being taken out to the car or watching a video. It’s based of Life, because this doesn’t change as we grow older, throughout all our lives, we are all going to learn differently and that’s ok. I think it would be a game that could be a good stepping stone into showing parents how important differentiation (whatever form it takes) is in the classroom.
